All an Illusion

By keeping up a good pace for the next five days, not stopping to hunt, the party of two elves, one human, and a wolf-riding halfling managed to catch up with the web-footed locathah and the small-limbed goblins. They also caught up with their destination, Mount Heatwing, and a big wall of swords blocking the ascent.

Just as Starq determined that the sharp-edged wall was probably only an illusion, a gigantic dragon-hippopotamus careened down the mountain toward them. The other people fled as the dragon-hippo shrunk and the mysterious bearded man popped into sight, wielding a scimitar.

Eltana noticed that the man's actions seemed driven from the outside, but the only way he would respond was to say "Keep Away from the Mountain." Dreneil quickly closed for battle. Meanwhile, Eltana misfired a sling bullet and discovered that a new invisible wall had sprung up before them, Erannar mounted on Farwind discovered the same about the ceiling, and Starq used his spidery climbing spells to determine that there were walls on every side.

The battle became touch-and-go, with the janni (for such he was) flying and becoming an invisible and impossible target. Starq, always a one to think of new uses for spells, used his new 'shave' spell to give the fellow a haircut. This was so odd that the janni stopped to take stock of his situation, and managed to throw off his evil influence.

The fight ended, and the janni and the watching dragon-hippo settled in to explain. The janni was being controlled by a covey of hags, one of water, one of forest, and one of magic, who had conspired to kill the Leader of the Forest, and with him, the truce between Land, Sea, and Air. The janni had been sent to make sure no one interfered, and had thus caused the trouble with the packs and also created some troublesome illusions, in order to scare people off the trail. The dragon-hippo then told the party that they needed to plant an acorn to start growing a new Leader of the Forest, and to find a Regent in the meantime, to whom they should give the Pearl of the Sirines, which the old Leader was carrying, and the Statue of the Air, which Erannar currently held.

To be continued...
