To Catch a Unicorn

Lord Talley, father of the young Ethan who'd been bested by Dreneil in the tournament, approached the group of forest experts. He offered them a reward in exchange for catching a Unicorn which had been sighted on his country property, and which he wished to entertain as a guest at his daughter Wena's 10 year old birthday celebration. After some deliberation, the adventurers accepted and set off to find the only human-sized Country House in the area.

At the gate they were accosted by a halfling demanding their business. Despite Erranar's fumbling, Starq managed to convince To Meilin that they were legitimate guests, though Erannar continued to press his bad luck.

On the way to meet with Brik the forester, the group was requested by Lima the shepherdess to look in at the pasture; some lambs had been strangled, but Lima could never see anything besides the rustling plants. They continued on to Brik, first, who showed them the golden arrows, or fluid they could put on their swords, to make them Merciful. Then they all trooped down to the pasture to help Lima.

As they approached the foreboding corner, Dreneil recognized a thick vine on the ground, with hand-shaped leaves, as an Assassin Vine, and alerted everyone to the danger.

Starq and Erannar picked it off from a distance, Erannar managing to avoid the curling grass that was ensnaring his feet. They eventually shot the vine to pieces, and the land was stilled. On examination, they found a single pink pearl trapped in its clutches, no doubt from some earlier victim. Starq, dissatisfied, looked about him very carefully for dangerous monsters. So, he found a tiny, kerosene-spewing dragon-hippo, which promptly put him to sleep after he tried to freeze it with a spell. Brik was quite skeptical about his story once he woke up.

The party equipped themselves with Merciful weaponry, and set out to track the unicorn. Between the three wilderness-experienced characters, they traced the unicorn through the forest and over a stream, and there saw the great beast.

A mighty fight ensued, with much damage on both sides - but when the unicorn saw it could not win, it took to the forest again, leaving the disappointed hunters in its dust.

The next day, the hunters tried again. The trail from the previous day was followed until it suddenly vanished. So they returned to the village, hoping to pick up new signs. The trail was cold, and they had quite a bit of trouble finding any signs, Eltana even turning into a bird to scout from above, until Blade caught a whiff of the elusive creature.

This time, they approached the fight with more tactics in mind - Starq cast Grease, which still let the unicorn attack the adventurers, but managed to keep it from running away. They subdued the beast and brought it back to Lord Talley's halls.

There, the adventurers were feasted, the unicorn blessed Wena, and all were happy.
